Tomis, the city where the Roman poet Ovid spent his exile, is today Constanţa on the Romanian Black Sea coast. The map marks it with a pair of towers, forty Roman miles from Histriopolis and twelve from Stratonis. It was the capital of the small province of Scythia Minor, and the late Roman historians Eutropius and Festus count it among the towns conquered by the general Lucullus. More than a hundred Latin inscriptions have come to light there. The modern name goes back to Constantia, in use since around AD 600.
