Troesmis

Igliţa

Listen to the story

Troesmis was a Roman legionary fortress with a civilian town beside it, on the lower Danube in the province of Lower Moesia, later Scythia Minor. Its remains lie at Igliţa in Tulcea County, Romania. Getae lived here first; the Romans pushed into the area around 29 BC. Before AD 112 the Fifth Legion Macedonica took over its defence, and the settlement that grew up around the camp became a municipium with its own magistrates. The Roman poet Ovid mentions it from his exile, and walls, an aqueduct and a Christian basilica survive.
