Tyana

Kemerhisar, südl. von Niğde

Listen to the story

Tyana, now Kemerhisar near Niğde in Turkey, was already an important centre in Hittite times and later the chief town of southern Cappadocia, on the road to the Cilician Gates, the pass through the Taurus mountains. The Greek geographer Strabo describes it standing on a well-walled mound said to be the work of Semiramis. Under Caracalla it became a Roman colony, and it was the birthplace of the wonder-working philosopher Apollonius. Nearby lay a famous hot spring with a sanctuary of Zeus. Curiously, the map preserves the old classical form of the name, while the Roman route registers use later, altered forms.
