Tivisco
Jupa ~ Caransebeş
Listen to the story
Archers, a unit of Moors and soldiers from Palmyra in the Syrian desert all served at Tivisco, a Roman fort on the upper Timiș, near Jupa in Romania. The fort took its name from that river, known in antiquity as the Tibiscus. The Tabula marks it with the usual pair of towers, and the name turns up again on the road just below, this time without a picture; both almost certainly mean the same place. The settlement later became a self-governing town, where eastern gods such as Jupiter Dolichenus and Palmyrene Bel were worshipped, and rich iron and gold mines lay nearby.
