Tibori

Tivoli

Listen to the story

Tibori stood on a rocky hill above the waterfalls of the river Anio, a favourite summer retreat where Roman patricians built their villas; the emperor Hadrian's villa lies just outside the modern town of Tivoli, near Rome. The Roman writer Cato the Elder traced its founding to Catillus, an Arcadian who commanded Evander's fleet. Its chief god was Hercules Victor, and Augustus often sat in judgement in the halls of his temple. Under Aurelian, Queen Zenobia of Palmyra lived here in exile. The map adds a road from the town to Nomentum that probably never existed; its nine miles seem to belong to another route.
