Thisdro Colonia
el-Djem (Barrington)
Listen to the story
Thisdro Colonia bore the rank of a colony, a town of Roman citizens, after Caesar or Augustus apparently settled army veterans in what had been an insignificant market town. Olive growing made it prosperous in the second century AD, and in 238 the two Gordians rose in revolt here, the elder proclaimed emperor, as the Greek historian Herodian records. Bishops are still named in the seventh century. The map marks the town with a pair of towers, and its remains, above all a great and splendid amphitheatre, stand at El Djem in Tunisia.
