Thenas

Henchir-Thina (Barrington)

Listen to the story

Thenas appears on the map as a town symbol without any name beside it; the name has been restored from other sources. The town lay at Henchir-Thina near Sfax in Tunisia, a harbour on the Gulf of Gabès facing the island of Cercina, and a valuable one, since no harbour could be built on the mainland directly opposite the island. Probably Punic in origin, it marked the end of the royal ditch that the Roman general Scipio laid out as a boundary in 146 BC. As a Roman colony, probably from Hadrian's time, it bore the title Aelia Augusta Mercurialis, after Mercury, and its bishops are recorded from AD 255 to 649.
