Tharrana
Harran
Listen to the story
Tharrana is almost certainly a copyist's slip: the true name was Charrana, the ancient Carrhae, where the Roman general Crassus met disaster in 53 BC. Its ruins lie at Harran in south-eastern Turkey. A list of places compiled in Ravenna gives a similar form, Tarana. The town was a road junction, with routes branching off towards Zeugma on the Euphrates, towards Edessa and towards Resaina. The map puts it eighteen Roman miles from Aladin, and eighteen each from the next stations, Hostra and Roschirea.
