Teleda

Sabirabad

Listen to the story

Teleda is marked with the usual pair of towers, the sign of a town of some standing, on a road far out in the Caucasus. Forty Roman miles lead to it from Ugubre, and a figure of forty-four onward to Philado, while the stretch to Lezela has neither a distance nor a drawn road line. Its location is disputed. One view places it near Sabirabad in Azerbaijan, where the Araxes flows into the Kura. Another links it with Mestleta, a city of Iberia south of the Caucasus in the geographer Ptolemy, which is identified with Mtskheta in Georgia, near Tbilisi.
