Listen to the story
Tavio, now Büyüknefes in Turkey, was a crossroads from which roads ran out in every direction, and the Tabula marks it with a pair of towers, drawn a little smaller than usual, probably for lack of space. The map keeps an older neuter form of the name that otherwise vanishes from the sources after the second century AD. The Greek geographer Strabo knew the town as a fortified trading place of the Galatian Trocmi, with a colossal bronze statue of Zeus in a sanctuary offering asylum. Settled since the fourth millennium BC, it is widely identified with the Hittite cult city of Tawiniya, though scholars disagree.
