Listen to the story
Taurunum was a strong fortress where the Sava flows into the Danube, facing Singidunum across the water. Today it is Zemun in Serbia, now part of Belgrade. A Roman register of routes calls it simply Taurunum of the fleet, since a squadron of the Danube flotilla was based here, and an inscription of the Pannonian fleet has been found in Zemun itself. The road from Sirmium past the fortress was renewed in AD 198, and a late Roman list of garrisons places cavalry and auxiliary troops here. Later ages renamed it: the Byzantines called it Zeugminum, the Franks Malavilla.
