Terracina

Listen to the story

Terracina, still called Terracina in Italy today, sits on a rocky spur on the coast of Latium, and the Tabula marks it with a pair of towers. The Roman writer Pliny notes that the Volsci called it Anxur, and the poet Horace pictured it perched on rocks gleaming white far and wide. Rome settled a maritime colony here in 329 BC, and the Via Appia ran through the town. Under Trajan the road was moved to the shore by cutting away the cliff of Pisco Montano, where numbers from ten to one hundred and twenty are carved every ten feet down the rock face.
