Listen to the story
Tarsatica was a Liburnian coastal town on the road from Aquileia to Siscia, and its remains lie at Trsat, just east of Rijeka in Croatia. The Roman writer Pliny called it an oppidum, probably a community of Roman citizens without a town charter, which it seems to have gained only under Hadrian. In late antiquity it became an important stronghold in the defences of the Julian Alps, densely settled and ringed by a double wall from the fourth century. The map adds a puzzle: two lines run on to Senia, one through Ad Turres. They may be a land and a sea route, or a copyist's misunderstanding.
