Syllas
Squille
Listen to the story
Syllas, identified with Squille in Campania, seems to carry the name of the Roman general Sulla: it is thought to recall his victory of 83 BC over the consul Norbanus, won near the temple of Diana between the Volturnus river and Capua. The map marks the station with a small drawing of a farmstead, though nothing explains why this modest place was given one. Scholars disagree on exactly where it lay along the Volturnus near that temple. Apart from the map, only a list of places compiled in Ravenna mentions it, so its entry probably dates from late antiquity.
