Spoletio

Spoleto

Listen to the story

Spoletio is Spoleto, a town in Umbria in the valley of the Clitumnus on the Via Flaminia. The copyist of around 1200 first wrote Soletio and then squeezed a p in above the first o, a correction still visible on the map. The road itself went wrong, too: the line linking the town to Forum Flaminii is missing, and its distance figure seems to have slipped onto a neighbouring stretch. Founded as a Latin colony in the third century BC, Spoleto still keeps remains of its polygonal walls, and by the fourth century AD it was a bishop's seat.
