Soloae
~ Karavostasi
Listen to the story
Soloae was a Cypriot harbour town, near modern Karavostasi, which the Greek geographer Strabo placed on a small river and the physician Galen knew for its mine. The Tabula marks it with a pair of towers, though the drawing seems almost an afterthought, with the name set closer to the road than to the picture. Nineteen Roman miles separate it from Paphos, and from here roads run thirty-three miles to Lapethos and twenty-nine to Tamassos. Some scholars suspect the map really meant the colony of Arsinoe, with Soloae only a stop along the way.
