Listen to the story
Sirmium, a Pannonian city with a harbour on the Sava, is Sremska Mitrovica in Serbia today. Under the Flavian emperors it became a Roman colony, and later Licinius made it an imperial residence. Emperors were born and died here: Decius and Probus were natives, Claudius the Second died of plague in the city in AD 270, and Probus was murdered here in 282. Remains of the imperial palace, a hippodrome, imperial baths and a granary survive. Crusaders knew the town as Francavilla, and its modern name goes back to a monastery of Saint Demetrius.
