Sitifi colonia

Sétif

Listen to the story

Sitifi colonia lives on almost unchanged in the name of Sétif, a town in Algeria set more than a thousand metres above the sea. Under the emperor Nerva it received Roman settlers, veteran soldiers, and became a colony, and later it rose to be the capital of its own province, Mauretania Sitifensis. In 372 AD the general Theodosius made it his headquarters in the war against the rebel Firmus. On the Tabula five roads meet here, but probably not all of them belong: the road to Ad Oculum Marinum should really run to another station, and one of the two roads to Ad Portum has no explanation.
