Sinus Corinthus
Golf von Patras (westlich) und Lepanto o. Korinth (östlich) (Miller)
Listen to the story
Written across a stretch of sea, with no picture beside it, is the label Sinus Corinthus, the gulf that reaches in between central Greece and the Peloponnese. It covers what are now the Gulf of Patras to the west and the Gulf of Corinth to the east. The lettering has badly faded: only the first word, then a C, an O, an H and a final S can still be made out, so no one can say how many letters the second word once had. The printed editions of 1598 and 1753 read Corinthus, yet the Roman writer Pliny calls it sinus Corinthius. An I was probably already illegible to those editors, or dropped out in copying.
