Listen to the story
Singidunum, now Belgrade in Serbia, grew up where the Sava flows into the Danube. It had a river port, and a pontoon bridge once crossed the Sava. After AD 86 it was the base of the Fourth Flavian Legion, and the legion's fort stood where the city's fortress rises now. The town became a colony in 238 and a bishop's seat in the fourth century, and the Emperor Jovian was born here. On the map, a puzzling abbreviation links it to the neighbouring station, probably the copyist's misreading of a sign meaning one mile.
