Simitu Colonia
Chemtou · Schemtû
Simitu Colonia lay in the valley of the Bagradas, the river now called the Medjerda, and its name lives on in the village of Chemtou in Tunisia. From the time of Augustus it was a Roman colony, officially the Colonia Iulia Augusta Numidica. The town was famous for its marble quarries, still visible today; worked blocks and stonecutters' inscriptions from them have turned up as far away as Rome. After 148 BC the Numidian king Micipsa built a hilltop sanctuary here for his father Massinissa, which in Roman times became a temple of Saturn. Trajan renewed the bridge over the river.
