Sicca Veria

Le Kef (Barrington) · Schak Benar el Kef (Miller)

Listen to the story

Sicca Veneria took its second name from a renowned sanctuary of Venus, goddess of love, whose founding was traced back to Sicilians from Mount Eryx; ancient writers tell of sacred prostitution there. The town stood on the hill that now carries Le Kef in Tunisia, on the road from Carthage to Cirta. In 241 BC Carthage's mercenaries, returning from Sicily, were quartered here, and their revolt broke out. Augustus later made it a Roman colony. The map shortens the name to Veria, with a stroke over the e marking the missing letters.
