Sena Iulia

Siena

Listen to the story

Sena Iulia is Siena in Tuscany, and its name joins an older Etruscan one, probably Saina, to Iulia, the family name of Caesar and Augustus. The town became a Roman colony under Augustus, perhaps even a little earlier, and the Roman writer Pliny lists it as the colony of the Senenses. It lay on the road from Clusium to Florence. The Roman forum was perhaps where the Piazza del Campo now spreads, a square that in the Middle Ages was still called Campus Fori, the field of the forum.
