City
Sidi
Selimiye, ehem. Eski Antalya
Listen to the story
Sidi is the map's spelling of Side, a form found nowhere else, probably because the Greek name was pronounced with an i. The name is older than the Greeks and means pomegranate, and the city's coins showed Athena holding one. The ruins lie at Selimiye on the Turkish coast of Pamphylia. The Tabula marks the city with a pair of towers and, for once, bends its stylised coastline into a bay to hint at the gulf. Its rival Perge gets no drawing at all. Side's harbour silted up so constantly that clearing it became a Greek proverb for an endless task.
