Sinope

Sinop

Listen to the story

Sinope, today Sinop on the Black Sea coast of Turkey, sat on the narrow neck of a peninsula with a harbour on either side, and grew rich on sea trade and tuna fishing. Greeks from Miletus settled it, though ancient writers told wilder tales: one traced the name to a Thracian word for drunkards, after a hard-drinking Amazon. From 183 BC the kings of Pontus ruled from here, Julius Caesar later settled a Roman colony in the town, and it was the birthplace of Diogenes the Cynic.
