City
Selinunte
Kale Tepe bei Gazipaşa, ehem. Selinti
Listen to the story
In AD 117 the emperor Trajan died at Selinunte, a harbour city on a steep rock of Rough Cilicia, near Gazipaşa in southern Turkey. For a time afterwards it was called Traianopolis, and excavators are studying a building thought to be his cenotaph. Around 557 BC it already appears as Sallune, the border of a local king. The map shifts this coastal town a little inland, probably for lack of space, and gives no mileage to the next station. Isaurian unrest in the fifth century hit it hard, leaving a small town that had once been great and rich.
