Segodum
Rodez
Listen to the story
Segodunum was the chief town of the Ruteni, a Gallic people in Aquitania, and is now Rodez on the Aveyron in southern France. Its Celtic name joins words for strength or victory and for a fortress, something like 'strong fort'. In late antiquity the old name gave way to the tribe's own, and from that comes Rodez, just as the surrounding Rouergue takes its name from the Ruteni. On the map the name has faded and is usually read as a shortened form of Segodunum. Three roads meet here, and from this point the distances return to Gallic leagues rather than Roman miles.
