Listen to the story
Scobre is almost certainly a slip of the pen: a copyist seems to have garbled Scodre, a medieval spelling of Scodra, the Illyrian city now called Shkodër in Albania. In 168 BC it was the refuge and residence of King Genthios, besieged by the Romans in the Third Macedonian War. In 40 BC the Treaty of Brundisium made the meridian of Scodra the border between Octavian, the later Augustus, and Mark Antony, and the unnamed river drawn beside the town, the Drilon, may echo that frontier. Later a Roman colony, the city was capital of the province of Praevalis from 284 to 600.
