Sarmategte
Sarmizegetusa
Listen to the story
Sarmategte is the map's clipped form of Sarmizegetusa, once the residence of the Dacian kings. After Trajan's second Dacian war, around AD 108 to 110, Rome founded a colony bearing that royal name in what is now Romania, built with the help of the fifth Macedonian legion. It soon became the richest city of Dacia, a metropolis in the third century and a centre of the emperor cult, with a forum, an amphitheatre, temples and a flourishing cult of Mithras. The map gives it the usual pair of towers, but the road on to Ad Aquas is not drawn, and its fourteen miles seem too short, so a station is probably missing.
