Listen to the story
Samosata was the fortified capital of Commagene, where the kingdom's own kings held court in the first century until the reign of Vespasian. It stood on the west bank of the Euphrates at a regular river crossing, guarded by a strong citadel, and later served as the base of an entire Roman legion. The satirist Lucian was born here. Today it is Samsat in Turkey. The map marks it with a pair of towers, twelve Roman miles from Charmodara, and no road runs on beyond it.
