Sammarobriva

Amiens

Listen to the story

Sammarobriva was the bridge or ford over the Samara, the old Celtic name of the Somme, and the town is now Amiens in France. In the winter of 54 to 53 BC Julius Caesar kept his army's main depot and archive here, guarded by a legion under Crassus. Agrippa's road from southern Gaul towards Britain crossed the river at this point, and in AD 367 the emperor Valentinian proclaimed his son Gratian Augustus here. On the map, one of the road lines leaving the town runs along a tear in the parchment and has faded so badly that every editor overlooked it.
