Saldas Colonia

Béjaia (Barrington) · Bougie (Miller)

Listen to the story

Saldas Colonia was a Roman colony, a town of settled veterans with full citizen rights, on the site of Béjaia on the Algerian coast. The Greek geographer Strabo knew it as a town with a spacious harbour on the frontier between King Juba's realm and the Roman province, and Augustus settled veterans of a seventh legion there. Under Antoninus Pius an army engineer from the Third Legion built an aqueduct with a tunnel for the town, recorded on an inscription found at Lambaesis. The map marks it with a pair of towers, which the copyist of around 1200 seems to have redrawn.
