Rusuccuru colonia
Dellys
Listen to the story
Rusuccuru colonia was a Punic town on a headland near the mouth of the Oued Sebaou, where the ruins of Dellys in Algeria now stand. Its name is usually explained as Punic for 'cape of the partridge'. The Roman writer Pliny places it on a fairly deep bay and says the emperor Claudius honoured it with Roman citizenship. An inscription found here shows it became a municipium, a self-governing town, under Septimius Severus, yet the map calls it a colony and marks it with a pair of towers. In 411, two rival bishops from here attended the council at Carthage.
