Rusicade Colonia

Ras Skikda (Barrington) · Philippeville (Miller)

Listen to the story

Rusicade Colonia began as a Punic harbour, and its name is usually explained as 'cape of the jug'. The town is Skikda in Algeria, and the headland of Ras Skikda beside the modern port still carries the old name. Under Publius Sittius, a partisan of Caesar, it became a Roman colony named after Venus, and later one of four colonies bound to inland Cirta, linked to it by a new road. The map marks it with a pair of towers. Bishops are recorded from the third century, and in AD 445 the town was granted two fifths of its harbour tolls.
