Regino
Regensburg
Listen to the story
Regino was the Roman legionary fortress of Castra Regina, today Regensburg in Bavaria, set on the Danube opposite the mouth of the river Regen, which gave it its name. It was built in the AD 170s as the base of the Third Italian Legion, a camp of about 543 by 452 metres whose north gate and stretches of wall can still be seen. Its cemetery held some six thousand burials. On the map, a much later hand has added the German name Regenspurg beneath the symbol, a note written long after the copyist of around 1200.
