Ratumagus
Rouen
Listen to the story
Ratumagus, capital of the Gaulish Veliocasses, is today Rouen in Normandy. Its ending, magus, marks an open settlement or market, and Celtic coins from the last years of Gaulish independence already carry the name. The town thrived where cargo from the sea was moved onto the Seine and the roads, and in the second century AD it was an important port for exports to Britain. In late antiquity it became capital of the province of Lugdunensis Secunda and seat of its governor, ringed by a fourth-century wall enclosing some eighteen hectares. Over the centuries the name wore down, form by form, into Rouen.
