Ravenna
Listen to the story
Ravenna is marked with one of the map's six bird's-eye city pictures: a roughly square ring of battlemented walls with brickwork shown on one side, a gate seen slightly from the side, and a tower and the top of a building rising inside. The town was built on piles among marshes, and Augustus made it the harbour of his Adriatic fleet. The picture itself is probably later. Scholars link it to the early fifth century, when Emperor Honorius moved the western imperial court here and the city became famous enough to earn such a distinction.
