Ressaina

Răs el Aïn, رأس العين

Listen to the story

Ressaina, today Ras el Ain in Syria, grew up near the source of the river Chaboras, and its name is explained as 'head of the springs': more than three hundred springs rise here to form the river. According to the Roman historian Ammianus, the emperor Gordian defeated the Persians at this place. In 380 the emperor Theodosius enlarged the town and strengthened its walls, and so it was also called Theodosiopolis. The ancient ruins lie a little north of the springs. On the map a road branches off here towards Singara, while the main route runs thirty-five Roman miles from Sahal and thirty-six on to Rene.
