Fl. Rhenus

Reno

Listen to the story

The Flumen Rhenus is the Reno, the river of Bologna, and the map draws it without a name. Its line comes down from the Apennines past the little picture of Bononia, joins a smaller stream just beyond the Via Aemilia and winds on into the Po near Hostilia. That was its ancient course; today the Reno reaches the Adriatic on its own. The Roman poet Silius Italicus spoke of Bononia of the little Rhenus, and on a small island in this river or its tributary, Octavian, Antony and Lepidus sealed the second triumvirate in 43 BC.
