River

Fl. Sagarius

Sakarya · Sakaria

Listen to the story

The river Sagarius, now the Sakarya in Turkey, winds across the map without a label; its name comes from the river-crossing station beside it. Oddly, the name does appear on a neighbouring river, really the Artanes, which even carries the Sagarius's characteristic windings and its role as the border of Bithynia. The stylised line hides the second-longest river of Bithynia, known since Homer. Myth says a man called Sagaris insulted the goddess Cybele, was struck mad and hurled himself into a stream once named for often running dry in summer.
