River
Fl. Savo
Savone
Listen to the story
The river Savo, today's Savone in Campania, has no name of its own on the Tabula; it is known only through the road station called after it, where the coastal road crossed its waters. Yet the map traces its winding course remarkably close to reality, and the stream was well known in Roman times. The poet Statius called it the sluggish Savo, and Pliny lists it too. Upstream it crossed the Via Appia at the Campanian bridge, where Horace, Virgil and Maecenas stopped for rest and a frugal meal, as Horace tells in one of his satires. Exactly where that bridge stood is still uncertain.
