River

Fl. Pyramus

Ceyhan

Listen to the story

The river Pyramus, now the Ceyhan in southern Turkey, is probably the nameless river drawn here, reaching the sea below the little picture of Aregea, rather too far to the left. The mouth may have slipped during copying, yet the real river shifted too, at times running out through two mouths, as ancient writers already noticed. The map roughly follows its course but misses the bend past Anazarbus and Mopsuestia, two towns that stood on its banks. The Greek geographer Strabo tells of stretches flowing underground, and of so much silt at the mouth that an oracle foretold the river would one day reach Cyprus.
