River
Fl. Samus o. Fl. Hierasus
Szamos o. Sereth (Miller) · Someş (Barrington)
Listen to the story
The Samus, now the Someş in Romania, is the name scholars give to one of four rivers the map draws running down from the Carpathians towards the Danube. No name stands beside it. Read against the road, it would be the river crossed twice after the station of Optatiana. Older research doubted that these rivers had anything to do with the roads. It saw them as copied from a world map, as tributaries of the Danube, and took this one for the Hierasus, now the Siret. The geographer Ptolemy lists four Carpathian rivers in much the same way.
