River
Fl. Sidenos fl. (Barrington) o. Fl. Thermodon (Miller)
Boloman Irmağı
Listen to the story
The Sidenos, now the Boloman Irmağı in Turkey, is drawn without a name on the Tabula, entering the Black Sea beside the town of Polemonion, just where the Roman writer Pliny places it. Older research took the line for the Thermodon, the river of the Amazons in the Argonaut legend, but the Thermodon flows well to the west. Unusually, the river does not rise from a mountain but from a slight swelling, probably meant as a spring. A lake was once seen there, but this is doubtful. Perhaps the vague source reflects the fact that no surviving ancient text describes it.
