Fl. Strymon

Strymon · Struma · Strymonas

Listen to the story

The river Strymon, now the Struma in Bulgaria and Greece, crosses the map without a label and is recognised by its course. Its line begins, fairly accurately, at an unnamed mountain range near Pautalia, where the real river rises, and passes south of Heraclea Sintica just as it should. Then it strays: instead of reaching the sea near Amphipolis, it ends near Thessalonica, and the lake it actually flows through is missing. The Roman writer Pliny called it the boundary of Macedonia, yet on the map it runs inside that province. In 481 BC the Persian king Xerxes bridged it where Amphipolis later stood.
