River
Fl. Tiona o. Fl. Titana
Listen to the story
The river known as Tiona or Titana runs without a name of its own among the rivers drawn after the Tigris, in the part of the map beyond the Euphrates. Its name comes from a road station called Titana where the route crosses it, and a list of places compiled in Ravenna has Tionas. It is probably the Diyala in Iraq, the river the Greek historian Herodotus called Gyndes. The drawing here is badly muddled: the Rhamma sends a branch into it, and it in turn flows on into the Ganges. Most likely it was meant to send one arm to the Tigris and run straight into the sea, mistaken for the Eulaeus, just as in the geographer Ptolemy.
