River

Fl. Trebia?

Trebbia

Listen to the story

A short stream with a single bend, drawn without a name, runs down from the Apennines into the Po beside Placentia, and it is usually read as the Flumen Trebia, the Trebbia in Italy. Its course is cramped only because the map draws the mountains close to the Po. Older research took it for the smaller Nure; later research prefers the Trebbia, a wild torrent whose gravel bed spreads more than a kilometre wide, and the river where Hannibal inflicted a heavy defeat on the Romans in 218 BC. The Roman writer Pliny counted it among the most celebrated rivers of Italy.
