River

Fl. Tessuinum / Fl. Albula

Listen to the story

Whether this stream is the Tessuinum or the Albula, the map itself never says, for it is one of many rivers drawn without a name. Its winding course runs down from the Apennines to the Adriatic coast of Picenum, crossing an inland road and then, near its mouth, the coastal road between Cupra Maritima and Castrum Truentinum, a station the copyist garbled into Castro Trentino. The Roman writer Pliny lists both the Tessuinum, whose name survives in the Tesino, and the Albula. The map tends to drop and reshuffle rivers, however, and other scholars see the Tronto here instead, the river whose valley carried the Via Salaria.
