River

Fl. Sinello o. Fl. Trinium] (Miller) / Sagrus?

Listen to the story

This nameless river in central Italy is taken for the Trinium, today's Trigno, or the neighbouring Sinello, though it may instead be the Sagrus, now the Sangro. The map draws its course from a mountain down to the Adriatic coast, where it runs out near Histonium, today's Vasto. The Roman writer Pliny praised the Trinium as a river with harbours, while the Greek geographer Strabo made the Sagrus the border between the Frentani and the Paeligni. There was room to write a name near its source, so its absence is probably a slip by the copyist.
