River

Fl. Tiberis

Tevere · Tiber

Listen to the story

Flumen Tiberis winds across much of one parchment segment of the map and all of the next, an unusual amount of space, yet its name is nowhere written. The Roman writer Pliny praised the Tiber as a trader in goods from all over the world. Around Rome the drawing is precise, with two bridges marked on the roads into the city. Upstream it grows careless: the source sits on the wrong side of Arezzo, and Perugia lands on the wrong bank. Beside Rome the river briefly splits in two, enclosing an island that never existed, probably a copyist's slip, half erased and then written over.
